PM Modi launched Sickle Cell Anaemia (SCA) Elimination Mission 2047 in MP on July 1 with a strong push to eliminate the SCA from India with special focus on tribal community

India has 706 different tribal communities comprising 8.6% of the population which has most prevalent cases of Sickle Cell Disease.
Sickle cell disease
It is a genetic disorder where RBCs of a person become distorted to look like a sickle-like shape. (see image above)
- Sickle cells die early, block the blood flow and other pertinent issues
- Patient faces persistent pain, fatigue, and anaemia impacting quality of life
- Can exist with symptoms or without showing symptoms

It poses significant threat to future and existence of our indigenous populations
High prevalence: RJ, GJ, MP, CG, JH, WB, OD, TS, AP, TN, KL, KA, MH
Partial prevalence: BR, AS, UK, UP
Government Efforts

A comprehensive system development is underway to address loopholes and ensure access to the proper healthcare and management for SCA patients
Dual elimination approach
Prevention to ensure new cases are not born
Manage treatment and provide adequate healthcare facilities for patients
Specifically for Tribal Population 👇🏼
1. If two people with sickle cell trait marry each other, it is highly likely for the child to have it too!
2. MoHFW and MoTA formulated a plan to screen approx 70mn individuals aged 0-40 years belonging to tribal and other groups in nearly 200 districts of 18 states
3. Post screening, smart cards will be given in local language enabling prospective to determine status of future children
4. Monitoring mechanism will be established at various levels to ensure participation and bring awareness on large scale
5. Other efforts: Sufficient budget, advanced technology, healthcare workers trained, infra and efforts in social awareness to combat disease
6. Web Portal launched to track and maintain complete record of sickle cell patients
