Ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s own military left her alone!😱
India saved her life by granting her refuge
How does Sheikh Hasina impact India?
And, What is the way forward? 👇🏻
Background
Ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina landed in Delhi with her sister
What shocked the world was that,
Some BANGLADESHIS are celebrating on streets.
WHY?👇🏻
This dates back to 1975 when Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated!!
Both his daughters fled to India to save their lives
Until yesterday Bangladesh was politically stable with promising economic growth.
Impact of her exit
We can only see: Unrest and Uncertainty
But how did Army come in the picture?
History of Army
Well, it is not new!
Army has always been actively involved in Bangladeshi politics
• We get to see numerous coups (Three in 1975 and one in 1982)
How do people accept this?
Because it is justified as means to maintain peace and order.
Interestingly, Bagbandhu was assassinated in a coup
This happened in 1975 August
You know what followed?🤔
2 more coups same year, both in November!😮
Hasina and India
Former PM Sheikh Hasina always found an ally in India
India has helped Bangladesh in
• Combating extremism and fostering economic growth
• Line of Credit worth Billions of dollars
Our stronger bonding is a direct consequence of resolution of key disputes in maritime and land boundary agreements
Challenges
Her exit has marked a dent on India-Bangla relations.
We get to see:
• Risk on $13bn trade in FY 2023-24
• Anti-India government potentially in Dhaka
• Potential unstability in North East India (on lines of 1971 war)
• Anti-India sentiment on streets of the country
• FTA under risk and stalling of Akhaura-Agartala Rail Link
Further, another potential hot area with LoC/LAC issues & Myanmar crisis is a big time challenge!
Way forward
India in order to protect her interest must look forward on key areas which include but are not limited to:
• Activating channels in Bangladeshi army as polity is in shambles
• Strengthening border security to monitor refugees
• Practicing lessons learned from Myanmar & Sri Lanka
*India has lessons on dealing with Burmese Army and civil unrest of Lanka to navigate through here!
