• Chocolate-coloured nocturnal bird
• Native to New Zealand
• Now mostly found in remote parks or islands
Context: After decades of decline, bred again in wild in Wellington (Tamil Nadu)
2. Dodo
IUCN: Extinct
• Tubby flightless birds
• Extinct from Mauritius since 17th century
• Were hunted by Dutch sailors & dogs/cats etc. that came long
Context: Efforts to reintroduce underway
3. Siberian Tigers in Indian Zoos
IUCN: Endangered
• 2 brought from Cyprus to Darjeeling Zoo
• Exchange program as 2 Red Pandas send from India
• Last such Siberian Tiger died in 2011 at Nainital Zoo
4. Green Turtles
IUCN: Endangered
• Found in Mediterranean Sea
• Sex of offspring dependent on incubation temperature
Context: Increase in their nesting range due to global warming
5. White-bellied pangolin
IUCN: Endangered
• World's most trafficked mammal
• Illegal trafficking routes from origins in Africa to markets in Asia
• Their scales believed to have medicinal properties, esp in China
Context: Have 2nd most chromosomes among mammals
